Collage Art Brief history: The art of collage has been around with artists such as Pablo Picasso and George Braque in the early 1900's experimenting with a variety of forms on a 2D surface. The artists of focus for this project formed their style during the 1920's from a reaction to WWI. The act of cutting, editing, pasting or 'destroying' in a sense was similar to the destruction of the war. Artists such as Hausmann and Hoch created styles of photomontage, collage and assemblage. These collages were an opinion of the times and a reflection of the artist. What are students doing: Just as these artists, students will be creating a collage that is a demonstration of themselves, a reflection of their identity. They will create a collage using a variety of materials such as newspapers, drawings, magazines, and construction paper. Students will also learn about composition, movement, and color theory.
Step One: Planning
List 10 things that you personally enjoy doing. Narrow it down to 5 afterwards and begin finding images via google or in magazines that have to do with those five things you enjoy.
Step two: Narrow it down to 2-3 things.
Step 3: Now where do I place all of this? Composition: arrangement of the elements on a 2D or 3D surface. Pick a focal point and then base everythign around that image.
Limitations: Colors: Black, White, and one set of complimentary colors. Focus on 2-3 things of interest only.
